Cherry, maple and ash retaining an old or original red stained surface. Hand stamped numbers on dial with the original bone or horn hand.
Signed in pencil on leather dust cover on bottom of gear box; "ER", perhaps Erastus Rude.  Probably New Lebanon, New York.  Circa 1840.  A similar example is illustrated in Shaker Furniture, plate #24.
